CONSERVATION
The aquatic environment needs our care and protection, and it is a challenge to maintain the beauty of the underwater world.
The Project AWARE Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to conserving underwater environments through education, advocacy and action. The A.W.A.R.E. philosophy of Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and Education was developed to stress the role of water enthusiasts, particularly scuba divers, in the protection of vulnerable aquatic environments.
CORAL WATCH
The Project AWARE Foundation has partnered with Coral Watch, an organisation built on a research project at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. Coral Watch aims to broaden the assessment of coral health worldwide and it has developed an easy and non-invasive method of measure coral bleaching or recovery, through the use of their Coral Health Charts. Data gathered by water enthusiasts about their local reefs are sent back to Coral Watch and then extensively analysed by scientists.
I am a registered Project AWARE Coral Watch Operator and I am able to offer information on how to get involved in this project and help protect our world and our water. You can also take part in the CORAL WATCH CORAL HEALTH CHART DISTINCTIVE SPECIALTY COURSE. |
WHALE SHARK PROJECT
The Project AWARE Foundation has initiated the Whale Shark Project in association with The Shark Trust to encourage water users around the world to submit images of their Whale Shark sightings in order to better understand their behaviour, population and biology. This project relies on user submission of sightings to the Whale Shark Sightings Database. Working with research groups, divers, scientists and holiday makers, the project aims to improve the protection and understanding of the world's largest fish.
I am a registered Project AWARE Whale Shark Project Operator and I am able to offer information on how to get involved in this project and submit Whale Shark sightings to the international database. |
SHARKS IN PERIL"We are emptying our ocean of sharks. As a diver and a global citizen acting locally, you can play a critical role in saving sharks. Start by signing the AWARE petition to save sharks."
The AWARE Shark Petition:
Yes, I'm appalled at the failure of the world's environment leaders at CITES 2010 in Qatar to approve trade protections for some of the Earth's most vulnerable and heavily traded shark species. I join with Project AWARE, divers and activists worldwide, calling on CITES Parties, between now and the next CITES Conference, to:
We call on governments around the world to heed scientific advice to provide better protection for all sharks and their ocean ecosystem. |
